Jersey City Today: People, Places and Things

Most people pay little attention to the buildings they pass each day, the streets they walk, the stores they shop in, as well as the restaurants and coffee shops they frequent. But these aspects of a city’s landscape provide many insights into its social, economic and political life. Like all cities, Jersey City’s built environment – from its streetscape of low-rise apartment houses above storefronts to its corporate office and luxury housing towers – can tell you a lot about the people who live there, their lifestyles, tastes, cultures, social class and aspirations. This cityscape also says a lot about what gets built where and why and with what impact. It also shapes the way people interact with each other and experience the city.  Jersey City, like many cities today, is a changing city, a city of contrasts and competing interests which are reflected in its changing landscape.
